Getting to and from school safely

As a parent or carer, it’s your responsibility to get your child to and from school safely. Student safety is our priority.

Keep our school community safe by:

  • driving and parking safely, even if it means parking further away and walking the rest of the way to school
  • being a good role model
  • never calling your child from across the road
  • using the safest place to cross the road.

We have a designated Kiss and Ride zone that is available for drop off and pick up. The Kiss and Ride zone is designed to help provide parents and carers a clear and safe place to drop off and pick up children.

The Kiss and Ride zone is marked with blue signage. A Kiss and Ride zone has exactly the same rules as a 'No Parking' sign during school zone times.

  • Drivers can pull up and assist their children to exit via the pavement side door.
  • Drivers can get out of the car to help with school bags and deliver the all-important kiss goodbye.
  • Drivers must remain within three metres of the car.
  • Kiss and Ride zones have a two minute limit.

Reminder:

  • Drivers are not to park in this zone while waiting for their children.
  • It is illegal and unsafe to double park next to the buses while waiting for entry to the Kiss and Ride zone.

The beginning and end of the school day are busy times for pedestrians and drivers outside schools.

Reminders:

  • Drop your child off and pick them up on the school side of the road.
  • Never call out to your child from across the road - it is very dangerous.
  • Always take extra care when driving in 40km/hr school zones.
  • Follow all parking signs - help keep your child as safe as possible.
  • Parents and carers are not permitted to use the staff car park.

For student safety, the front main gate is the entry and exit gate for all students not travelling by bus or using the Kiss and Ride zone.

Reminders:

  • Up until at least 8 years old, always hold your child's hand when crossing the road, walking on the footpath, or in the car park
  • Up until at least 10 years old, supervise your child in the roadside environment
  • Stop, Look, Listen, Think with your child every time you cross the road.

While riding promotes physical activity, busy roads and traffic conditions around schools can sometimes make it less safe. Students riding bikes must walk directly from their classroom to the bike racks at afternoon dismissal.

Reminders:

  • always wear a correctly fitting helmet when you and your child ride or skate
  • ride or walk alongside your child until they are at least 10 years old
  • you can ride together on footpaths, until your child is 16 years old, unless signposted otherwise
  • regularly check to ensure your child has a well-maintained bike or scooter.

Bus travel is a great way for students to travel to and from school. Students arriving by bus are to safely exit the bus and proceed through the main gate.

At afternoon dismissal, students travelling by bus will assemble in bus lines on the hard court. Buses are then loaded in order, under supervision.

Reminders:

  • Parents are reminded to obey the 'No Standing' signs in the bus bay.

For parents and carers of younger children

Discuss with your child how to be safe when:

Also talk about and practise:

  • safe travel routes
  • plans for when unexpected things happen
  • what to do in wet weather.

Subsidised school travel

Transport for NSW provides subsidies to assist school students.

  • The School Student Transport Scheme provides eligible students with free or subsidised travel on public transport between home and school.
  • The School Drive Subsidy may help towards the costs of driving children to school if you live in an area where there is no public transport.
